Yesterday Dan Rather gave us a qualified report on what he learned on the health of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. A good reporter has a duty to tell us such things on matters of great public interest -- even when they later prove not to be so.
In this spirit, Dan has made his limited report on the impending power vacuum in Venezuela. Such a momentous event will affect the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, indeed, every continent and country in the world. It will affect the brooding Middle East. It certainly will affect our teetering world economy and many international business interests. It most importantly will affect the U.S., as we are still huge importers of oil.
Yet all major news organizations have ignored Dan’s report. Maybe we should wait a couple more months for better proof from the grave. Or is it possible that Dan with his 60 years in journalism has access that others do not?
Regardless, he somehow got the scoop and had the courage to report it in true journalistic style. Those who know otherwise, or better, please tell. His report is too important for us to be coy about it, or to sit on the fence waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Good reporting, Dan. You still got it.
Forget Dan Rather, let's wait a couple months.
